I grew up in Staincross, Barnsley and went to state primary and comprehensive secondary school in Darton. The seminal moment in my youth was the Miners’ Strike and I, like many of my peers, were forced down south to find jobs. This led to individual deprivation which lead to the our area being forgotten by Westminster politicians of all persuasions over the intervening years. But we are fighting back and now are in a unique window of opportunity to have a wonderful future here!
I created a successful marketing business based on northern principles of fairness, honesty, hard work and have built a northern HQ here in South Yorkshire which now employs 40 people and has a £20m turnover. This now runs effectively without my day-to-day involvement giving me the opportunity to use 100% of my energy to building a better South Yorkshire.
Yorkshire is a fantastic place to live, work and bring up a family and we Yorkshire-folk have a love of the County that no-one could be left in any doubt about when they talk to us!
However, it could be even better living here, and that is why I am standing for South Yorkshire Mayor; to bring the experience, passion, contacts and straight-forward ability to get things done and to enhance the lives of every single person in South Yorkshire if I get elected.
We have a window of opportunity to catch the “green industrial revolution” and for many to work from home or shared spaces that they want to rather than the place they had to commute to- both of these give fantastic new opportunities to South Yorkshire to build high quality jobs here whilst having an opportunity to have a home and family life which is good for the environment, the community and also everyone’s physical and mental health.
Rather like some of the most successful regions of the world, I will connect the fab people already here doing fab things and this will put the region on the map. Which is important, as few outside of Yorkshire could actually say where South Yorkshire is- and that matters because people don’t move to, or invest in places they don’t know. So I will make sure EVERYONE knows where South Yorkshire is using my marketing skills so we are one of THE places to invest in and bring very fab new people and investment into the area!
I will take no salary if I am elected and instead donate it to The Samaritans.
Literally all of the pay that I will get for this role, totalling £320,000 during the period of office, I'm going to give away to charity. I will be donating to The Samaritans because my mum volunteered for the charity for 30 years, right here in Barnsley, and I have seen the life-changing good they do first hand.
I know how important it is when people are in very tricky spots to have somebody to talk to and it's an example of how I, as a new type of politician, do things differently. I'm here to work tirelessly to make the life chances of everybody in South Yorkshire, the best they could be by making sure that words turn into deeds.
I will post my expenses on-line every month.
I will post a video every week I am in office as to what I’m up to- and why!
Transparency breeds trust and in politics that is sorely needed. I stand for a new kind of politics beholden to no-one other than the electorate.
The Yorkshire Party is a political party demanding an end to Westminster-centred politics. Our region has been neglected by politicians in Westminster for years.
Both Conservative and Labour incompetence has left Yorkshire lagging behind on almost every level. Only the Yorkshire Party is offering an ambitious vision to revive our democracy and invest in transport, health, jobs and our children’s futures.
Yorkshire has a larger population than Scotland, an economy twice that of Wales but the powers of neither. By calling for a devolved Yorkshire parliament we aim to build a stronger Yorkshire within a fairer United Kingdom.
