As a local businessperson myself, I know all too well many of the challenges our area faces. I also know that earning our way in the world is not only essential for a thriving region but also for our pride and sense of worth at an individual level. Much as South Yorkshire needs its fair share of support from central government, we need to build a sustainable economy that works for everyone and provides well paid, valued employment.
Entrepreneurs - are needed to build a thriving economy. We will set up a “business-in-a-box” service to make South Yorkshire the easiest place to establish a business in the world and offer everyone who starts a company mentoring so they can power ahead, once established.
Great networks - South Yorkshire is a wonderful place for companies to invest. I will set up an “Economic Twinning” service with areas in the South to attract inward investment/orders from the overheated south and to create jobs in South Yorkshire. Delivering levelling up today, not waiting for Westminster or more warm words, but action.
Great jobs - South Yorkshire needs secure, well-paid jobs and the employee needs to feel valued. As Mayor, I will ensure that any companies contracted by the Mayor’s office must have the highest standards of employee rights - we only buy goods and services that maximise community wealth-building as well as offering excellent value for money.
Inclusive growth - no area be left behind. We need to ensure that opportunity is delivered as equally as possible. The “forgotten towns” and areas of South Yorkshire need special priority to make sure wealth is created here as well.
Innovative town centres for the post-COVID era. Let’s welcome local, sustainable, independent businesses to set up shop. I will push for methods such as flexible rent arrangements, targeted business rates reductions and coordination with local councils to promote local sustainable businesses, community groups, artists, and independent small businesses. I will support projects like the British Museum of the North to be established in Sheffield to make the tourist economy thrive.
